Disaster Preparedness Drill for Foreign Residents

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) will hold the Disaster Preparedness Drill for Foreign Residents in January 2017. Held annually since fiscal 2006, this drill is aimed at increasing awareness and knowledge on disaster preparedness among Tokyo's foreign community. To that end, the TMG is looking for foreign residents to participate in the drill.

Details on the event and how to register are provided below.

1. Date and time

Friday, January 20, 2017, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (scheduled)
*Pre-registration is required to participate.

2. Place

Komazawa Olympic Park General Sports Ground (1-1 Komazawa Koen, Setagaya-ku)

3. Number of participants

About 300 people (200 foreign residents, 100 TMG disaster language volunteers and others from relevant authorities)

4. Program

  1. 1)Experience an earthquake simulator; practice collapsed building rescue techniques; first-aid training
  2. 2)Visualize and mentally train for a disaster using disaster preparedness educational tools
  3. 3)Participate in TMG disaster language volunteer training (role-playing exercises where volunteers practice taking calls from foreign residents)

5. Cooperating organizations

Setagaya-ku, Tokyo Fire Department, Tamagawa Fire Station, Tamagawa Police Station, and others

6. How to register

Those who wish to attend need to register with the Office of the Disaster Preparedness Drill for Foreign Residents* using the online registration form or fax by Monday, December 19.

Additional information on TMG disaser language volunteers

A system that allows Tokyo residents, including foreign residents, who have attained a certain level of language skill to register as volunteers. These volunteers support foreign nationals when a large-scale natural disaster occurs by providing interpretation and translation. In normal times, they also serve as volunteer interpreters on occasion. (As of October 1, 2016, 729 people are registered volunteers, offering support in 15 languages.)
