On Tokyo’s Selection as World’s No. 1 City in Condé Nast Traveler Magazine’s
Best Cities in the World: Readers’ Choice Awards 2016

I would like to thank the readers of Condé Nast Traveler for choosing Tokyo as the best city in the world. It is an achievement I am incredibly proud of and I am so pleased that you have taken the time to visit our wonderful city.

From its modern high-rise buildings to the spider web of traditional streets and narrow laneways below, I believe there isn’t another city in the world like Tokyo where people can have such a variety of experiences in one location. Not only can visitors enjoy unique food, entertainment, architecture, and traditional culture that have stemmed from hundreds of years of history, but also a modern pop culture scene that includes iconic fashion, anime and manga.

With safe and efficient public transport systems supported by world-leading technologies, and comfortable, intricately designed hotels, visitors can relax and enjoy Japan’s beauty and famous hospitality without worry.

On top of this, many people don’t know that despite being one of the world’s largest metropolises, Tokyo is also blessed with vibrant greenery and beautiful, water-surrounded nature just outside the city.

As a leading global tourist destination both in name and reality, I want to continue to enhance Tokyo’s charm and welcome even more visitors from around the world as we look towards the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.
