Disaster Preparedness Drill for Foreign Residents

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will hold the Disaster Preparedness Drill for Foreign Residents in January 2016. Held annually since fiscal 2006, this is a free drill aimed at increasing awareness and knowledge on disaster preparedness among Tokyo’s foreign community.
The event will be held as follows:

Date and time

Tuesday, January 26, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (scheduled)

*Pre-registration is required for participation.

Venue

Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium (Sendagaya, Shibuya-ku)

Theme

“Look, listen, remember, and take them home!”

Number of participants

About 300 (200 foreign residents and 100 TMG disaster relief (language) volunteers and people from relevant authorities)

Program

  1. (1)Experience an earthquake simulator; training to rescue people trapped in collapsed houses; first-aid training
  2. (2)Disaster simulation using educational materials
  3. (3)Participate in training for TMG disaster language volunteers (role-playing exercise where volunteers practice handling phone inquiries from foreign residents)

Those who wish to attend are requested to register with the Office of the Disaster Preparedness Drill for Foreign Residents via the online registration form or fax by Tuesday, December 22.

[For reference] TMG disaster language volunteers

Tokyo residents, including foreign residents, with a certain level of language skills who have been registered as volunteers. In the case of a major disaster, they provide interpretation and translation services to support foreign residents. In normal times as well, they occasionally serve as volunteer interpreters.
(As of October 1, 2015, 848 people are registered as volunteers in 15 languages.)
