Nomination for Inscription of the Ogasawara Islands on the UNESCO World Heritage List

January 18, 2010
Bureau of Environment

At a meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Coordination Committee for the World Heritage Convention held on January 18, 2010, it was decided that the Japanese government would officially submit a nomination to the Secretariat of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for inscription of the Ogasawara Islands on the World Heritage List. This nomination is a partial revision of the draft nomination submitted on September 29, 2009.

Following this, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is scheduled to make an inspection of the islands sometime this summer, and deliberations on whether to include the Ogasawara Islands on the list are expected to take place at the World Heritage Committee meeting in 2011.
