New Tokyo Waterfront Walk Map of the Upper Sumidagawa River Area

September 30, 2009
Bureau of Industrial and Labor Affairs

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) has been creating waterfront sightseeing maps so that residents of Tokyo and visitors to the city can have an enjoyable time along the waterfronts of the metropolis.

A map of the upper Sumidagawa River area, which retains the charms of the Edo period (1603-1868) and an old town atmosphere, has been printed this year.
Incorporating views and information from local wards, tourist associations, and other organizations, the map introduces interesting sightseeing spots, suggested walking routes, and other valuable information.
The TMG hopes that residents and visitors alike will find this waterfront walk map useful.

1.Map Type

Upper Sumidagawa River Area
Japanese and English versions are available (5,000 copies each)

2.Details

The map provides information on the waterfront area and nearby sightseeing spots, including local events, traditional crafts and local delicacies recommended by the local wards and tourism associations, the relaxing public parks along the Sumidagawa River, and a suggested walking route around Senju, the starting point of Oku no Hosomichi (The Narrow Road to the Deep North), a major work by Matsuo Basho, the famed poet of the Edo period.

3.Areas covered:

Akabane, Oji, Ogu, Minowa, Kitasenju, and Minamisenju

4.Distribution

The maps are available at locations including the Tokyo tourist information centers (Main Office at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, Haneda Airport branch, Keisei Ueno Station branch), relevant local ward offices, and Tokyo tourist information desks.
