Message from the Governor of Tokyo

Toward a New Tokyo

Hello. I am Yuriko Koike. I have just recently taken office as the Governor of Tokyo.

I envision a Tokyo government where decisions are made by the citizens of Tokyo and initiatives are advanced with the citizenry. I will put you first at all times, raise the level of transparency and obtain your understanding as I steer a metropolitan government that is definitely "of, by, and for the citizens of Tokyo."

To resolve challenges faced by Tokyo and ensure its futher growth, I will create the three new faces of our city. Tokyo will become a Safe City, a more vibrant capital that ensures more safety and security for its citizens; a Diverse City, where everyone—men, women, children, senior citizens, and the disabled—can actively participate in society and lead fulfilling lives; and a Smart City which embraces the world and is a leader in the fields of the environment and finance. When I advocated the Cool Biz concept in my former capacity as minister of the environment, the support of people around Japan served as the powerful force in spreading this movement. I will use the full resources of the metropolitan government and spare no effort to have you share my vision for Tokyo.

I believe that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, now only four years away, will be a touchstone for the creation of a new Tokyo. It is not only the athletes who will take center stage at the Games—each of us will also take on an important role in welcoming visitors from around the world. Let's unite to lead the Games to success.

Tokyo is the engine that drives the growth of Japan. By significantly changing Tokyo, we will set this engine strongly into motion and open up a bright future for Tokyo, and all of Japan. The driving force behind this will be the support of each and every one of you. I shall be sincerely grateful for your cooperation.

Yuriko Koike
Governor of Tokyo
